How do you carry out modern construction work in one of England’s grandest historic settings, without disturbing its timeless beauty?
That was the challenge we faced at Blenheim Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as while essential ceiling repairs were underway in the palace’s Saloon, we were commissioned to transform the visitor experience – maintaining a seamless sense of grandeur, even in the midst of construction.
Together with the creative minds at Creative Gravy, we were handed a delicate task: conceal four scaffold hoardings within an active public space without compromising the dignity and visual splendour of the room. The solution was a graceful and immersive fabric installation that would harmonise with the environment rather than distract from it.
Executing this project meant more than just design – it meant adapting to the rhythms of a living, breathing heritage site. From sound-conscious scheduling to zero-impact materials, every detail was considered through the lens of conservation and visitor experience.
What might look like a simple fabric covering was, in truth, a carefully choreographed installation, performed quietly, quickly and with deep reverence for centuries of craftsmanship.
Sometimes, the best design is the one that disappears into the story of the space…
